Introduction
Once WordPress has been installed, you can access the WordPress Administration Area to manage your website.
From the WordPress Dashboard you can:
- Create pages
- Publish blog posts
- Upload images
- Install themes
- Install plugins
- Manage users
- Configure website settings
This guide explains how to access and log into WordPress.
Before You Start
Before logging into WordPress, ensure that:
- WordPress has been installed.
- Your website is accessible.
- You have your WordPress administrator username and password available.

Step 1 – Open the WordPress Login Page
Open your browser.
In the address bar, enter: https://yourdomain.co.za/wp-admin or https://yourdomain.co.za/wp-login.php
(Replace yourdomain.co.za with your own domain name.)
Step 2 – Enter Your Login Details
On the login page enter:
Username or Email Address
Enter the administrator username or email address that was configured during installation.
Password
Enter your WordPress password.
Step 3 – Click Log In
Click: Log In
If the details are correct, you will be taken to the WordPress Dashboard.
Understanding the WordPress Dashboard
After logging in, you will see the WordPress Administration Area.
Common menu options include:
Posts
Create and manage blog posts.
Pages
Create and manage website pages.
Media
Upload and manage images, PDFs and other files.
Appearance
Manage themes, menus and website design settings.
Plugins
Install and manage WordPress plugins.
Users
Manage WordPress user accounts and permissions.
Settings
Configure general website settings.
How to Log Out of WordPress
To log out:
- Move your mouse over your username in the top-right corner.
- Click: Log Out
This will securely end your WordPress session.
Forgotten Your Password?
If you have forgotten your password:
- Open the WordPress login page.
- Click: Lost your password?
- Enter your WordPress username or email address.
- Follow the password reset instructions sent by email.
Cannot Access the Login Page?
If the login page does not open:
Check:
- Your domain is active.
- WordPress is installed.
- SSL is functioning correctly.
- The URL is entered correctly.
Try: https://yourdomain.co.za/wp-admin
instead of: https://yourdomain.co.za/wp-login.php
or vice versa.
Common Login Problems
Incorrect Username or Password
Verify:
- Username spelling
- Password spelling
- Caps Lock is not enabled
Password Reset Email Not Received
Check:
- Spam or Junk folders
- The administrator email address configured in WordPress
Too Many Failed Login Attempts
Some security plugins may temporarily block repeated failed login attempts.
Wait a few minutes and try again.
Security Recommendations
For improved security:
- Use a strong password.
- Do not use "admin" as your username.
- Keep WordPress updated.
- Only create administrator accounts when necessary.
