Installing Joomla on our servers step by step

To install Joomla follow the 5 steps below :

Step 1 - Enable PHP on your website

  1. Open the control panel by going to http://cp.yourdomain.co.za (replace yourdomain.co.za with your own domain name) or you can use http://cp.hostworx.co.za
  2. Login using your supplied user credentials
  3. Click on the "Domains" Icon
  4. Click the "domain name" name that you want to enable PHP for
  5. Scroll down and click on the "PHP/ASP/Perl Scripting Support" Icon
  6. Select the "php scripting" option
  7. To Enable PHP, simply change the drop down list to the   Version you want to use. (Note this is normally set already for you)
  8. Click "Save" Button
  9. Click "Back" Button
  10. Click "Back" Button (top right of window)

Step 2 - Create/Add a Mysql database

  1. Scroll down and click on the "Mysql 5 Database" Icon
  2. Click the "Add" button
  3. Give the database a name and click the Save Button. We reccomend that you use the name of the domain with an "_db" as the database name ie "abc_db"   (Please NOTE : If a database with the same name already exists an error will occur.
  4. The database will be added.
  5. Click the "Add" button under database users
  6. Fill in the User name you want to use. (We reccomend the domain name with an   "_usr" at the end.)
  7. Fill in the password and confirm the password again.
  8. Select the database from the available database field, click the button pointing to the right, to assign this user to the database.
  9. Click the Save Button
  10. Click the "Back" button to return to the mail administration window.
  11. You Have successfully added a new database to your domain

Step 3 - Download the wordpress files

Go to http://joomla.org and download the joomla files to your desktop, once the file has downloaded, you can either ftp the zip file to the server using the file manager or ftp the unzipped files,


Step 4a - Filemanager / Upload the wordpress files to your website
To upload the files via file manager, from the main domain window select the file manager, click on the wwwroot folder in the left window, click on the upload icon in the menu bar, click on the browse button and find the joomla zip file you downloaded earlier, then click the save button. this will upload the file into the wwwroot folder. Once uploaded, highlight the file in the right side of the window and then click the unzip icon in the menu. ensure the folder location \wwwroot is selected and click on the save button, this will unzip joomla into the wwwroot foilder for installation. If you want you can highlight the zip file and deleted it if you want or you can leave it there.

Step 4b - FTP / Upload the wordpress files to your website

  1. Click on "My Computer" (XP)   or Just "Computer" (Windows 7/8) on your desktop or via the start menu (bottom left of screen)
  2. In the address bar at the top where it has "My Computer" or "Computer" type in the ftp address of your domain.
  3. If your domain name was "abc.co.za" your ftp address would be ftp://ftp.yourdomain.co.za   (replace yourdomain.co.za with your own domain name)
  4. A Username and password box should pop up.
  5. Enter your Username for the FTP server, this is normally your domain name IE "abc.co.za", if you have not changed it from the automatically created user.
  6. Enter your password which was emailed to you in the original email, or change it by, clicking on the ftp accounts icon, under your domain, and change the password to one you prefer to use. (We reccomend upper and lower case chars, 8 digits long that is not easily gueassable)
  7. You should now be presented with the wwwroot folder of the domain, if the user was manually created and the "/" root folder was selected you will see the 3 system folders, namely :
    1. Logs   - where your web log files are saved for statistics purpose
    2. Db - where your backups of databases are located if you need them.
    3. Wwwroot - this is where your website files must be located for your website to work.
  8. Minimize this window or move it off to the side where you can access it later.
  9. Open the joomla zip file you downloaded and extract it to your desktop, create a folder "joomlax.x.x" where x.x.x is the version, once the folder has been extracted, click on this folder will be shown the joomla website files.
  10. Select all of the files by pressing "ctrl" + "a" this will select all of the files, right click on any highlighted file and press "ctrl" + "c" this will copy the files that needs to be copied, click on the "ftp window" we opened above, click on the wwwroot folder, and once opened press "ctrl" + "v" this will begin to copy the files up to your site.
  11. Once these files have been copied up to the site you need to begin the installation process.

Step 5 - Run the Joomla installation

  1. Open the website address in your browser IE http://www.yourdomain.co.za (replace yourdomain.co.za with your own domain name)
  2. Enter the required information, site name, description, enter an admin email address and a secure admin username and password (at least 8 digits, uppercase and lower case chars and not easily guessable, ie pa55word, or admin 123, etc). Note : write this admin username, email address and password down.
  3. Click the "Next" Button
  4. Enter the database information that you wrote down in step 2
  5. Enter the server connection details i.e. "Mysql.yourdomain.co.,za" (replace the yourdomain.co.za with the domain you are installing Joomla to.)
  6. Enter the database Username
  7. Enter the database username password.
  8. Enter the database name
  9. Leave the Table prefix field as it is, or give it a random 6 digit name or abbreviation.
  10. Click "Next", if the database information is correct you will be taken to the overview page.
  11. Click the "Install" button, it will install and give you the congratulations page.
  12. Once the site is installed, you can click on the remove installation folder button or you can do this via the file manager or via the ftp window if its still open.
  13. Congratulations you have just installed Joomla.
  14. To access the administration area goto http://yourdomain.co.za/administrator, to goto the website goto http://www.yourdomain.co.za
