Exchange Activesync on Android Phone or Tablet Setup & Configuration

NOTE: Exchange ActiveSync does not support the corporate calendar or email applications for the Motorola Droid, Droid 2 and Droid X. This is because these phones utilize a special application that does not follow Exchange ActiveSync standards.

Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is available as an optional add-on to SmarterMail. Unlike the other synchronization methods, Exchange ActiveSync uses direct push technology to sync email, calendars, contacts, tasks, notes and folders in real time. Once you have had the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync enabled for an email account in SmarterMail, the Android device will need to be configured.

Follow these steps to connect your Android device to SmarterMail via Exchange ActiveSync:

  1. On your Android device, navigate to the settings menu.
  2. Click the General tab, then Accounts.
  3. Click Add Account.
  4. Click Microsoft Exchange Active Sync
  5. Enter your email address and your password and click Manual setup.
  6. In the Domain\Username field, enter your username and domain using the following format: \exampleme@mydomain.co.za.
  7. Your password should automatically be entered. If not, enter it now.
  8. In the Server field, enter the URL for the webmail interface (webmail.yourdomain.co.za)
  9. If you are not using SSL, ensure that Use Secure Connection (SSL) is unchecked. ** (Enable SSL)
  10. Click Next and configure your personal preferences for the frequency and amount of data to synchronize.
  11. Click Next again, and configure your name as well as the connection name and click Done.

Your Android powered device is now setup to synchronize data using Exchange ActiveSync

** To use SSL/TLS you need to setup the mail server by doing the following.
1) open up a command prompt on your computer (Start > Run > cmd > Ok )
2) type in ping mail.yourdomain.co.za (replace yourdomain.co.za with your own domain name)

note the ip address that the ping command returns, ie 196.22.190.49 or 59 depending on the ip address returned you then need to setup the mail server as follows:
if the ip address returned is 196.22.190.49   then use mail49.hostworx.co.za as the mail server name in step 8 above
if the ip address returned is 196.22.190.59   then use mail59.hostworx.co.za as the mail server name in step 8 above
